It runs fine except now that it's cold I go out in the morning and it cranks and starts, and then immediately dies. After it runs for awhile and warms up, I can go out and it starts right up and stays running. No check engine light.

JK:

This may be one of 2 problems.

1. The fuel pressure may be low, and the rise in temps helps with that. A weak fuel pump or plugged fuel filter would cause this. Aside from istalling a fuel poressure gauge, you could try and have someone bang on the bottom center of the fuel tank under the truck. This will sometimes free up a weak pump.

2. The throttle bore and plate have carbon on it. Carbon will effect starting and idleing. Especially on these electronic throttle systems.

You can remove the air duct from the engine and clean out the bore and throttle plate using carburetor / choke cleaner real good. Then take it for a ride and do a few hard accelerations to clear the cleaner out.
<img width='1' height='1' The gauge on the dash works. The engine gets hot, and the car has not over heated. Is my problem thethermostat or the heater core?

Several things can cause a no heat condition. Assuming the coolant is full, there could be air pockets in the cooling system- this engine is prone to having leaking intake manifold gaskets, and/or blown headgaskets. Either can make air pockets in the cooling system, and the heater core cannot transfer heat from an air pocket into the interior. Will not necessarily overheat. Possibly a plugged heater core not allowing coolant to flow through it. Possibly a temp. door problem in the dash not directing air over the heater core.
A bad thermostat will usually either cause an overheating, or an engine that will not get up to proper operating temp. Checked owners manual then scanned internet for more info. Found your site with the ABS codes, but we were unable to find a parts store that could read the code. Took the car to the dealer who read the code as C1214. Your site gives the definition of "Brake Control Relay Contact Circuit Open," which doesn't sound that bad. The dealer says the EBCM has to be replaced for about $1100. We just wanted to know if this repair is consistent with the code, given the high cost. Thank you for your advice.

JK: Hello and welcome. A service bulletin search came up with no related results.Yes, this ABS code C1214 description does sound fairly harmless. A relay is usually a very inexpensive part to replace. The problem is that the system relay is integral to the EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module). The diagnostic chart for this code is pretty straight forward. A couple of function tests with the scanner, and a few resistance checks with the volt / ohm meter. The EBCM is usually the cause. The cost at the dealer is consistent with this repair.

Programming of an EBCM is required if replacing with a unit that was not the original to the car. This would need to be done with a dealer scanner. I believe this company i sent the link to mostly repairs your unit, so programming would not be needed.Replacement of the unit is a little tricky. It is located on top of the frame rail where the front and left ( driver side ) come together. It is bolted to the ABS valve assemebly. Removal of the left side inner fender shield, and some TORX sockets are needed.I think my website will let me send you some pic of its location and removal procedures if this is something your hubby would like to tackle. Again, a little tricky, even for a guy who does this for a living.

Pontiac Grand Prix 3800 V6 SES Light Vacuum Problem

Problem with my 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3.8 L V-6 (non-supercharged)
My Service engine soon.
p0108
Just replaced the upper intake manifold.
I have a 2001 Grand Prix GT (non-supercharged). I just replaced my upper intake manifold due to warping causing a coolant leak. After putting everything back together I have a problem with the vacuum system. At idle when I take off the oil cap there is way to much suction coming through. It pulls the cap back hard. When I cover it with my hand the engine RPMS go way up and it sounds like the vacuum is starving for air. Cold weather. Took TB to
garage, ran codes and 5 codes came back. The garage checked out a few
of the codes and said that all values and sensors were fine. Garage did not
specify which codes they checked. Said they only checked out a few of the
codes. SES will not reset, comes right back on with the same codes.
Garage feels that it must be the computer and it needs replaced. I have
read that if the computer is bad, the vehicle will run rough. It runs fine, no
indication of anything wrong other than SES light. Could there be
something else causing all these codes, something simple instead of
replacing the computer?

Yes, I did get your last response. I wasn't sure if I was suppose to reply or not. As of right now, the SES light has been an ongoing thing. It is always a different reason why it is on. O2 sensor, other sensors related to emissons system, specifically the secondary air system. The garage has replaced parts to it, about a year ago. Those parts were the first they checked
and they said they are fine. I don't even remember all codes. Everything has been running great for about a year. Haven't had the light on. Light came on about a week ago and my husband drove it for the entire week with the light on before we put it in for service. The garage did not tell us which codes were in history and which were new. They just gave us a list of codes. The next day after the garage looked at it is when we noticed gas smell and from a full tank, saw that it was burning through gas fast. Which would make sense with the
two of the codes, 455-large leak, 172-running rich. Garage said they cleared the codes several times and each time they cleared the SES light came right back on with the same codes. Basically they said it was probably the computer giving false codes and to call the dealership. In the meantime, took it to another garage. Found a loose wire, I believe a ground wire perhaps???? Not sure what wire, to what system, but found a loose wire, tightened back where it belonged and cleared the codes. That was yesterday, so far the SES has not come back on. Can let you know if SES comes back on, driving it today to see if light
comes back on. I wonder if it were something that simple like a loose wire that caused it all? On a side note, I have a Chevy Impala 03, that had abs light with service traction soon code c1218(I think) anyhow, turned out to be a loose ground wire. Tightened wire back in its place, light reset, hasn't been back on since, about 3wks now.

GM Tech:
Well, the P0455 would have nothing to do with running rich, or the P0172 code.
P0455 is usually a gas cap problem, or a vent solenoid.
P0128 is "Coolant temp below thermostat operating threshold" usually caused by a faulty thermostat. That may cause the rich code, since engine temp is not high enough, and engines always burn more gas when cold, as compared to being warmed up.
P0606 is an internal fault in the PCM. This may be the cause of more than just this codes, or only this code. The ground may have fixed this one. Also, there is a PCM programming update for this year to correct false P0606 code.

2001 Oldsmobile Aurora V6 and V8 Code P0410 P0385

2001 Oldsmobile Aurora codes.
Mileage = 85400
Engine size = 3.5 3500
check engine codes p0385 & p0410
P0410 can on first then po385
The light would go out for a short time but would come back on. GM has a kit with new pump and hose- part # 19515548. Instructions included with kit.Check the AIR fuse in the underhood fuse block fisrt. If it is blown, then the problem is the pump, and possibly the harness is melted. If fuse is not blown, and the pump is good. Also from under the car. A little tough to get to. Will need a socket, extension, and swivel to remove. Quite hard on the wrist. Removal of the starter will make it easier, but not absolutely necessary. After replacing the crank sensor, you will need to have a "crankshaft variance re-learn" procedure done, or the same code will come back. This needs to be done with a scanner. Engine turns but no fuel. Traced it back to no power to the fuel pump relay and no signal from the pcm. Put power to the grey wire and pump runs. These wires are what sends the signal from the key in the cylinder for the secruity system.
When the key is in the cylinder, the cylinder reads the key chip. It is just a resistor.
The chip completes a circuit in the cylinder so the security module can read the resistance.
When these wires break, the module cannot read the key, so starting is dissabled. The PCM does not get the "OK to start:" signal.
Depending on some conditions, the system will either dissable fuel pump, or injector pulse.
Repacement of the key cylinder is required to repair this.

My 2005 Chevrolet Silverado Drivers Side Vents Always Hot with A/C On, Passenger Side Blows Cold

There are 2 common causes for this.

1. The Heater A/C control panel, which is also called the control module, has a software problem where is causes an overftravel of the the temperature door motors. There is a motor for each side. The control module would need to have a programming update done to it. This would only be able to be done at the dealer with the scan tool and GM terminal.

2. The actual drivers side temp door motor has failed. Replacement of the motor would be needed. These motors are approx. $80. Expect 1 1/2 hours labor to replace.

This is actually more common than the reprograming. We have done reprogramming first, only to find out that the motor itself was faulty. Only way to be sure is to have a scanner on it to control the door motor, and see if it moves.

You can try to reset the system by turning key off, removing the fuse labled "HVAC/ECAS" in the under hood fuse box for 1 minute. Re-install fuse,
Then start the truck and do not touch any A/C control for 3 minutes.
Turn key off for 10 seconds, then start truck and check operation.
Sometimes this will reset the door motor, but may act up again. could be in a few hours, days or weeks. No way tell.

2007 Chevy Impala Clunk in Front of Car

Suspension problem on my 2007 Chevrolet Impala. Used to start when you touched the key and in 1 day it began to crank for a long time prior to starting. Turning key (fuel pump) on and off 2-3 times before cranking seems to help allot. Fuel pump was replaced during tune-up at 100K. No notable vacuum leaks, pressure regulator replaced with no change. Mileage has gotten considerably worse, especially when towing. No codes displayed at all. Plugs replaced at 100K were OEM Autolites. Any ideas before I drop the tank again?

MW:
The fact that this problem started all of a sudden, and the turning of the key a few times to help it start does make me think a fuel pressure problem. It is possible that the connector on top of the fuel pump assembly has a burned terminal. This would cause low fuel pressure because of the high resistance in the fuel pump power feed circuit. That would explain the hard starting, but not the poor economy. Suggest having fuel pressure checked. Should be at least 55 PSI. Even 2-3 lbs. less can cause this concern. This 5.3 engine is also known for the intake manifold gaskets leaking vacuum. This causes a hard start and also high idle in cold ambient temperatures, as well as hesitation off idle and unstable idle when engine hot.I would also check those Autolite plugs since they have been in ther for about 30k miles. Have seen many times non AC Delco plugs cause odd problems.

2001 Oldsmobile Intrique A.I.R. Fuse for air pump is good. New relay for air pump. Checked all vacuum lines to the two air diverter valves they good. There is vacuum at solenoid switch from throttle body but no vacuum after solenoid switch.i did jump out air pump relay and it did turn on pump. But doesn't seem to be turning on vacuum solenoid to diverter valves and also not turning on relay to air pump. I hooked up a vacuum pump to valves directly and they also did not hold vacuum. Checked all vacuum lines and they are right and not broken. Car has 95,000. Thanks.

JK:Thank you for the tip / donation.OK. A few things.Be sure to check the fuse for the air valve solenoid. It is in the under hood fuse block. 10amp, labeled ENG EMIS.I will send a schematic in a few minutes to go along with the info given here. That fuse is hot with key on or engine running. Check for power at pink wire at solenoid after checking fuse. The problem with not using a scanner to turn the entire system on, is that there are 2 separate circuits to the system. Just jumping the pump relay does not turn on the air solenoid. You would have to ground the ground side of the solenoid to activate it. While I was pulling into a parking space, the ABS light came on at the exact time I felt my van start to fight me. I had my foot on the gas pedal and the van almost came to a complete stop (similar to as if I was breaking). Why does my abs light come on

JK: An ABS light coming on when turning is usually the sign of a front wheel speed sensor problem, or one of the harnesses going to each. This will usually not cause the problem of the van fighting you and hard to keep it moving. If this van is all-wheel drive, then this could happen. In that case, yoiu may have a problem an ABS sensor or harness, or a problem in the rear drive unit. Either way, the system would have to be scanned for trouble codes in order to find out what system has a problem, and begin diag. of the system.
<img width='1' The repair will take approx. 2 hours if the part is in stock.

2004 Chevy Cavalier ABS and TRAC OFF Light

Problem with my 2004 Chevy Cavalier LSMileage = 56000

Engine size = 4 cyliinder

dash lights = service w/ wrench, ABS, No Traction codes = no codes

work done prior = Brake pads replaced over a year ago

tech = kk

question = My service, ABS and No trac lights are all coming onintermittently, but at the same time. A problem in the ABS will cause the ABS light to come on, traction control system will be disabled, and the service vehicle light will come on. The ABS computer will have to scanned for codes. Ford was the only U.S. car maker that

showed an increase, as small as it was.

From a personal perspective, I noticed a LOT of Clunked cars in the back

parking lot of a local Nissan dealer in my area. The vast majority were

Chevy trucks, cars, Pontiacs, Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Ford cars and trucks.

Had to stop and count...

97 U.S. made cars and trucks ready to be junked. Many were in nice shape.

So, 97 GM, Ford cars and trucks traded in (JUNKED) for the

purchase of new Nissan's.

That means 97 less vehicles in my area that may

need a little work or regular maintenance.

97 owners switch from domestic to foreign.

97 vehicles purchased that are not U.S. made.

Some people say "Ya, but they are made right here the good ol' USA"

Many are, but where do the profits go ? Sure the factory employees that build them

are spending their money on houses, funiture, going out to eat, etc, as normal.

So I quess those comunities are doing OK. It is common to 2006 and 2008 models also. A common cause for this is the fuel injectors are slightly restricted. The dealer will perform a fuel injector balance test and do a cleaning procedure. If the injectors do not show improved flow, they will be replaced. There is also a reprogram for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Suggest getting in as soon as you can. With the check engine light on,l you will not be able to pass state emissions test, and can cause more problems with the way the car runs.

2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer Check Engine Light P0455

2004 chevy trailblazer
Mileage = 46000
Engine size = 6 cyl
dash lights = yescodes = p0455
question = what should i be looking for when code p0455 comesup....evaporative emission control system leak detected (gross leak)

JK:
Code p0455 is a large EVAP leak. A simple test with a test light and a scanner that can turn the vent solenoid on and off would need to be done to test the valve.

2003 Chevrolet Malibu Theft Security Problem Repair

Problem with my 2003 Chevy Malibu
Mileage = 100000
Engine size = 3.4
Ignition will not turn, acts like it is stuck Chevy Malibu 2003

JK:Sounds like the ignition lock cylinder is bad and needs to be replaced. The cylinder is also the sensor for the security system. You could try to spray a little WD-40 in the cylinder, and work the key in and out, turn it back and forth. Sometimes that will free up the cylinder, but it will still need to be replaced. There are many variations of the system going back to the early 1990's.This warning could be on when the engine is running, indicating a fault has been detected in the system. If left unrepaired, there is a good posiblity that the car will eventually not start. There are several different possibilities for the cause of the warning, depending on the make / model / year of the vehicle. Anything from a bad ignition cylinder wire, to a bad cylinder to a dad Body Control Module (BCM).After market (non-factory) alarm and remote start systems can cause havoc with the factory theft system, causing this warning light, or a no start.

Pontiac Goes The Way Of Oldsmobile

Remember when the same thing that is going to happen to Pontiac, happened to me at Oldsmobile. There are any ground wires around under the drivers side of the dash. If one was left off, or loose, it could cause all the problems.
All of these things can be related to the Body Control Module (BCM) or a harness for the BCM. That is except the check engine light. That most likely is not related, unless a main ground as stated ubove.
I would definetly have the shop that did the repairs look at it. A good shop would.
Really need to have all the computers scanned, and look through many schematics to find a ground or harness in common to all the fault codes that would be stored in the different computers.
You could also go under the passenger side of the dash and unplugg the BCM, then plug it back in to see if just a loose connection. They may have also bent some wire terminals in the BCM or any other conectors.

GM CAR AND TRUCK AUTO REPAIR HELP EXPERT MECHANICS: 2006 Chevrolet Impala Service Tire Monitor System

More Equinox repair Help

Oil Leak and Engine Knock After Oil Change 2007 Cobalt

Had another failed engine after the customer was at a local

Quick Oil change facility. I checked the tire pressures, and they all show dashes. What can i doto reset the light. Is this something i have to go to the dealer for?

A common cause for this, and for possible problems with your remotes, is a problem with the remote control door lock receiver(RCDLR) There is a service bulletin for these conditions that has the technician replace the module, antenna, program the module, and the tire monitor system. This procedure will correct all other these problems. Since you are under 36k miles on an 06, this repair will be under warranty. Just make an appointment with your nearest dealer.
I will send along the service bulletin so can have it with you.
More Info

2005 Cobalt Check Engine Light

SES on 2006 Chevy Cobalt

Mileage = 37,000

Engine size = 2.2 L 4 cylinder

dash lights = SES check engine light.

GM tech = jk

question = The check engine light is on in my 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt 4 cylinder. Is this something to worry about. The car runs just fine and starts good. Any damage if keep driving like this. I am out of work and really cant take to a shop to tell me what is wrong, then sell me a bunch of parts and service.

Thanks for any help.

JK:Any time a check engine ( SES ) light comes on the dash, the computer system is seeing a problem in one of the emissions or other systems. When the light comes on, a 'Trouble code' is stored in memory. Even if the light goes out, the code is still in the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). There are many, many things that cause this light. The first step is to have the system scanned for codes with a code reader. This can be done for free at many of the large national parts store chains. Then diagnostics of the system needs to be performed. Just because a code is related to a particular sensor, does not mean that senor is faulty. Many things can cause codes to be set for a sensor or system that is not related to the codes set. Example: an oxygen sensor codes does not necessarily mean the oxygen sensor is bad. The problem could be with another sensor, misfires, vacuum leak, fuel quality, etc.

2006 Chevrolet Impala coolant leak

Replaced an other set of head gaskets.

Common problem of antifreeze loss and leak on Impala 3.5 or 3.9 L
V6 engine is the rear cylinder head gasket.

We replace both head gaskets.

These have all been under warranty.

2007 Pontiac Torrent

Dead battery on 2007 Pontiac Torrent.

If this crossover is jumpstarted incorrectly, it will

casue the main 80 amp fuse in the fuse box to blow.

This will cause no power steering, "service stability system" warning on the dash. other electrical components to control or monitor every aspect of the engine. From controlling the fuel and ignition systems, to monitoring the emissions.A problem in any of these systems, or subsystems, can cause the check engine light to come on.The first step in any diagnosis of the check engine light is to get the computer (PCM or ECM) scanned for codes. Any time this warning comes on, a code is stored in the computer memory along with many data parameters that were present at the time of the fault.A simple code reader that can be purchased at any automotive supplier can retrieve these codes. Many of the large national parts store chains will scan the system at no charge. The code will give an indication as to what system has / had a problem. The more expensive scanners will also show live data, and allow further diagnosis by being able to control parts of a particular system.

More GM warning indicator light descriptions.
